It sounds like your technique is OK. When you make the "short jerks" try to vary this. For example, pause for a couple of seconds in between jerks. Or do strong jerks and soft ones. Also vary your line retrieve speed. Try fast and slow. Generally slow is better for me.
You might also like to try suspending a squid jig under a float. Set it so that the jig will be a metre or two above the sea floor. This often works quite well for me. You do not need to jerk the jig if using a float. If a squid grabs the jig, then the float should be pulled under the surface and you will know you have caught a squid!
What technique is used by the other people who caught the squid? If I were you I would copy what they do! Maybe you can stand close to them so you can see how they make their fishing rigs.
