you can suspend the jig under a float...perhaps 1 or 2 metres deep (in deeper water set it deeper). most people suspend baited squid jags under floats but it does work for artificial jigs too.
most people will only use the float when they want to cast out the line and forget about it. if you are actively casting and retrieving then you generally would not use a float unless you were worried you would get stuck on the sea bed.
