Hi Leonard,
Hopefully this year we will have even more Albacore hooked up as last year when we had gone out we only had the one rod and we were at the end of the season. These year we can drop a spread of 6 rods, 4 in our new permanent rod holders on the rear gunwale and 2 on almost horizontally mounted holders to give a sort of mini outrigger spread.
Albacore are fun to catch and being much closer to land no so expensive to go trolling for, as opposed to Bluefin Tuna where we have to go 20-30 miles offshore! If you don't have access to a boat we'd be happy to take you along with us, basically as part of our efforts to raise awareness and give people a go at new styles of fishing, we started doing a cost sharing exercise. As you know the cost of fuel is high in Malta and this season will be around 50cents per litre! so we usually estimate how much fuel we'll be using for the day and split that between the number of us going on the boat to fish.
Alternatively we're also trying to encourage people to meet on organised trips, contrary to typical beliefs we've come across here, going out in a pack increases your catch rate. The more lures in the water, the greater the chance of attracting and keeping fish in the area. If you come across Albacore or Bluefin, there are plenty to go around!!
Live squid would be nice but then again I don't have a live bait well! I've read squid are not easy to keep alive so I'm guessing its unlikely we'll manage with that. But effectively would be nice to catch squid, freeze them and then use them as bait. Tuna, Swordfish etc love em!
We're also rigged up with Chem lights, and LP Electralumes which can be dropped down several hundred feet on the rig so you can illuminate just above the jig. As for the deeper sites on the West coast, we're certainly up for those, happy to drift at night so no worries there <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Drop me a PM if you're interested, and hope to see you on the forum at MFF as well.
Regards,
Nick
