Hi Nick,
some serious Albacore you have there! I'll help you with squid, but you'll have to help me with Albacore!
Summer Time is not the best time for squid, however I must admit, I never really tried then either. The best time is between September and February. Are you looking for live squid to fish with? Because that might be rather difficult in summer.
I'm not sure how much the light really does help because most of the squid we catch are in 20 - 40 metres deep. We stick to old tradition and we still use a strong light reflecting on the water, at least it helps to luminate the lures. You do occasionally get a few squid playing around on the surface too. I'd like to try deeper sites on the west coast this summer however. I see squid in Marsaxlokk in Summer so they are there, you just need to find them!
