I think the 'codmen' of WSF tend to look down on the recreational quest for cephalopods. as I said, my first post on there was about squid & it was ignored! still habits & customs change fast, don't they? your question about land based spots. I'm based in the 'rias baixas', which refers to the series of 4 estuaries in the southern half of galicia on spain's north west atlantic coast. these rias are rich in marine life & attract large shoals, particularly in the summer months, of sardines, horse mackerel etc; it is thought that the squid & all the predators attracted to those, follow them in. so, fishing can be hectic at times, though at other times, downright boring, like everywhere I suppose. any well-lit fishing village, small commercial port will do. you only have to look towards the end of the quay, harbour wall etc, to see it festooned with people squidding, literally side by side. I don't think it could catch on in the UK, 'cos they have a different concept on what can be considered ''vital space". it was tough for me at first, but it also a social thing, you hear some bizarre conversations some nights & it can be a real hoot at times. I love it. a word of warning. most of the big commercial ports & therefore the brightest, in terms of flood lighting, are off limits to the general public. just head for the small places like campelo, combarro, raxó, sanxenxo, a toxa, o grove (home to a mega seafood fest in october) & go with the flow! que pesqueis mucho!!

best,

mac
