I have tried night spearing for gars, but never for squid. Do the squid actually come to the light, or does the light just let you see them? A gas lantern is a good idea, since it frees up the hands (I have been using a torch). Now is the time of year for real calm nights on the Bay, but yes, it is bloody cold. I went for a fish at Mordialloc Pier last night, and my hands are still numb! But it was still good for a few squid, and a runny nose.
Will let you know how I go with the spearing.
