i too, voted for the baited pilchard.
on many occasions i have pulled little squid out of the water as they were attached on my 3gang baited pilchard rig while fishing for tailor, during the nite.
for baited squid jigs, i usually bait a yellowtail or tailor as their flesh is much tougher than the pilchard's, and it can withstand much more abuse than the soft pilchard flesh.
