Hi everyone,
I am often asked by people how to shrink an image file so it can be uploaded to the forums. Ideally, images that are to be uploaded to squidfish should have a filesize no greater than 50 Kb (kilobytes) and an image width no more than 500 pixels.
Here is an example of how to shrink an image using a free program called IrfanView which is available for download from the following webpage -

STEPS
1) Download the program
2) Install the program. [Note that during the program installation, you are given a choice to install some E-Bay tool bars. I recommend unchecking these boxes (as is the case in the dialog box below)]
3) Load the IrfanView program
4) Click on "File" then "Open" and then locate the image that needs to be compressed and then click the "Open" button.
5) Click on "Image" and then "Information" and look to see the "Current size". This might be displayed as something like 900 x 675 Pixels for example, which would mean the image is 900 pixels wide and 675 pixels high. Close the dialog box by clicking "OK".
6) If the image is wider than 500 pixels (it probably will be), do the following - Click on "Image" then "Resize/Resample..." and then type in a width of "500". You will see the height automatically adjusted to preserve the image proportions. (Make sure the "preserve aspect ratio" button remains ticked or the image will become distorted.)
7) Click "OK" and the image will be adjusted to have a width of 500 (well done!).
8) Next, Click on "File" and then "Save As.." and type in a new and unique file name (must be unique name to avoid over-writing the original file or any other file!) and select the file type (JPG - JPEG FILES) - Once the JPG file format is selected, you will see the following box appear.
Set the "save quality" slider somewhere between 70 and 80 and click on "Save" and the job is complete.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
- Remember to rename the compressed file because if you do not it will try to over-write the original image and you will only be left with the compressed image! Also make sure the file name you come up with does not clash with any other existing files in the folder where you are saving the image.
- We chose JPG format above because this is best for photos. The GIF format is better for line drawings and cartoons.

- You can shrink images with many other image viewing or graphics programs and the process is much the same as described above.
- If the image you are working on is less than 500 pixels wide, then you can skip steps 5, 6 and 7.
