Moving around makes a bit of sense, although my opinion, is it depends on the direction of the tide. I think the squid tend to be attracted to the piers, especially at night, looking for small fish to eat. But my opinion is to fish on the downcurrent side especially with a faster current, as many times I've noticed when there is current the bait fish and squid will be on the down current side.
With a slower current I've generally seen them more under the pier, or up-current, perhaps waiting for bait to come towards them.
If there is a spot where more light hits the water, that's where I would concentrate my efforts, as they are attracted to light.
