Squid around now are summer over squid, the "fall run" won't really start until the end of the month, earlier if we're lucky but the last couple of years it has been late, not really heating up until October. What kind of gear are you using? I use a light, short (5'), sensitive rod with four pound flourocarbon line and I prefer Yamashita Naory jigs in the 1.8B size. YoZuri Auri Q RS jigs in 1.8 size are pretty good also. If you are using heavy line on a long (7' or more) heavy or medium rod and large jigs you will not do well unless they are in thick and hungry. I presume you are on the north shore area, so a trip to Tomo's Tackle in Salem may be a good idea for you. Tomo has a lot of the best jigs and his prices are reasonable, and he can tell you which are doing the best catching. I prefer white or white/red head, orange, pink, and green jigs. When the squid are finicky I sometimes go down to the smaller 1.5 or 1.6 size jigs. I would not recommend using heavier line than six pound when using the 1.5 and 1.8 size jigs. Did you watch and see what kind and color jig the guy who got the half bucket as using? Always copy the high hook. And even ask questions. I often do better than others partly because I have been doing it for over forty years and I gladly give tips to those who don't catch as many as I do. I do fish mostly from docks and piers and my above gear works really well for those places.
