I don't like most of the egi rods, they are too long for my taste and often very costly. I use a slightly less than five foot long graphite (carbon fiber) rod that is designed for freshwater fishing such as trout and also not made to use more than six pound test. I did build it myself with a solid laminated wood reel seat which also helps to feel the light touch of a finicky squid. If an aggressive squid hits it the tip bends and recoils, almost hooking the squid without my having to strike. I also prefer to fish by feel rather than watch the squid attack my jig and strike.
