So I'm the new guy on the block...been out 3 times and the most squid I've got in a night is 3...LOL
Â
I'm a river fisherman, mainly salmon and steelhead, and since all the runs are late this year because of the light rain, the rivers need a couple, maybe a few weeks to heat up a bit more. Â So I gave squidding a try and I like it! Â And it doesn't hurt that they are so delicious. Â But......just like river fishing, I obviously need to put my time in and have a lot of learning to do. Â Not being racist in any way, but it's amazing to watch the Asians! Â I can be right next to them fishing at the same depth, using a similar style jig and they are bringing them up and I'm not.
Â
I've done my research on the internet regarding gear and technique, time of day, depth, etc, etc...I think I just have to put in some time and learn the ropes.
Â
I'm currently using a 8 foot Lamiglas spinning rod in 8-12 lb rating with a med/fast action. Â I need to change my line to all mono. Â I just kept my river gear on the reel, which is the blue power pro braid. Â I think that if they are catching sight of that line, it may be scaring them away. Â I do run a mono leader from a snap swivel. Â I will start a separate thread with my newb questions, cuz I've got a few. Â LOL
Â
Anyways, I hit Redondo and Des Moines last night from about 9pm to 3am. Â Redondo was really slow, only a couple guys bringing up a couple here and there. Â I got one at Redondo, and then decided to move on after a lull. Â Well, my buddy said try Dash Point, so I get there only to find that it closes at dusk. Â Which is too bad because it's a dark dock and right now they've got a massive Christmas tree out on the dock all lit up. Â I'm sure that thing is a squid beacon for a mile out. Â So I headed out and hit Des Moines. Â I got 2 more at Des Moines, while the guys right next to me were pulling in some big ones (8-10 inches). Â I finally had enough around 2:30am and had to get up at 7am for work, so I figured I should probably sleep for a couple hours.
Â
I live in the South End...if anyone wants to teach a newb, I'm a quick learner. Â I'm an experienced fisherman, just new to squid. Â LOL...they are tough little buggers to feel on the line.
