Only reasons Asians are the standard is because there are rarely any other ethnicities out there fishing for squid lol, just like how whites are the standard in hunting 
though I think the jig is half of it, having the right jig doesn't mean much if you don't know how to "feel" the weight of your line/jig when a squid grabs onto it.
