I'm confused by that once they were hooked, they let go? It could be you reeling in technique that rips it out of their tenticles or candles. If you leave the drag relatively loose and reel slow but steady, keeping pressure, most squid will be caught.
I have landed one squid before with the others in fear. I usually change the jig colour or size so you don't think they are under threat. You can also leave that spot for 10-20mins and then comeback. It has worked for me in the past.
