I've only caught a couple of small arrows in my time and from memory did not taste too bad, a little tougher than calamari. I think most squid when purchased as rings both at the market and at the fish shop are arrows. The price pretty much gives it away. I'm also pretty sure my local malay restaurant uses arrows in their spicy calamari dish and they do a pretty good job.
Around this subject I had a chat with my uncle who has been involved in the fresh seafood business for many years and he gave me the advice to choose frozen squid tubes when buying arrows to eat or at the market as he believes these are fresher because they have been processed and frozen aboard a ship. I use allot of arrows for bait and would like others opinions on whole fresh/frozen tube bait experience.
Also my uncle told me a story regarding someone who purchased large numbers of arrows to pickle - He used to prefer the pink ones (unfresh) because they pickle the best!!
