Hi Nathan, I can understand not wanting the hooks too big, but I would think that too small would be an issue. There are a few different varieties of hooks available out there that are large. You have the ones that have a large diameter wire size about 1.4mm and yeah, those might be too big. I'm thinking about a wire size similar to what you find on the smaller hooks about a 0.9mm wire size, with about 14 - 16 points. Those shouldn't spook the squid at all, as it should actually outline your bait quite well, especially if you got them hooked head first. Remeber as well, squid are QUITE agressive on food. I assume you've seen the "bait attack" jigs available, there are also similar cage type jigs made of wire that are available. I don't think these things spook the squid.
So you say that you get your bait gets attacked towards the back of the head???? You got the head up or down on the jigs???
Hey, if you can manage it. Can you give me a photo of a baited jig as well???
Now your idea, a set of hooks half way down the rod???? If it's that high up, how do you intend to slip on your bait???
I've seen the razorback jigs, a couple photo's of them anyways. I might incorporate something like those into my product line in the fall. I can't imagine how to incorporate something like a razorback into a bait jig though.
I'll send a couple of photo's of some different types that are available.
