Have been trying to catch my first squid for the past few weeks. Finally got one bite the day before and another bite yesterday. No other luck on other occasions. The two bites are exactly the same but the squid got away on both occasions. Jig was thrown quite a distance away, when I reeled it in I can see small brown colour thingy following behind it, thought was a small fish or something as can't see quite clear under the jetty light. Both time the squid only attacked when I almost pull the jig out of the water, last minute they were like almost jumping out of the water to grap my jig I can feel they are hooked but when they are out of the water about 1 foot they squirt the black ink and dropped from the jig and fall back into the water, only leave traces of black ink almost like laughing at me da_n! So far haven't landed any squid yet after so many tries at different times and places. Still looking for that first ever squid. I have a couple of questions though:- why don't they bite the jig earlier only when I almost pull it out of the water? I mean they have so much time following it from such far distance but only bite it when it almost break the water surface?- also will jig size affect the miss? I can see both squid are quite small size when they drop back into the water and I am using size 3.5 jig could this be too big for the little fellas where they don't have such big mouth to bite and hold on to the jig? Any expert advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
