- why don't they bite the jig earlier only when I almost pull it out of the water? I mean they have so much time following it from such far distance but only bite it when it almost break the water surface?
Squid are pretty intelligent creatures believe it or not. But most importantly, they have excellent eyesight. Sometimes they just aren't falling for the jig. While the jig is on the bottom (or below subsurface), they have a lot of time to decide whether or not they want it...or believe the jig is a real meal. When you reel in the jig and it gets closer to the surface, the squid doesn't have a lot of time to think or observe...they just react. Very similar to fish.
- also will jig size affect the miss? I can see both squid are quite small size when they drop back into the water and I am using size 3.5 jig could this be too big for the little fellas where they don't have such big mouth to bite and hold on to the jig?
Yes, in most cases, jig size is important. Small jigs get small squid. And big jigs get the big ones...IN MOST CASES.
When the squid are in heavy & are hungry, they will nail any jig, in my experience. When the squid are in heavy, sometimes they wont hit anything lol. Sometimes it takes some time to figure out exactly what they want. And sometimes you just strike out no matter what you do. Thats the beauty of squid fishing. They can be a challenge. Keep at it. Youll get em!
