Hi guys,
I moved to Canberra about 12 months ago from Darwin, i am a keen angler (who am i kidding im sick im out 3-4 days a week and when im not fishing i am planning my next trip) anyway was reading the above posts and maybe able to give some advice. LBG is full of fish but targeting certian fish is a challange, Carp are everywhere and you seem to have already got some good advice on how to catch them, ie find a weed bed or grassy bank burley up and load a small size (ultra sharp hook) i use size 4 or 8 mustards with corn kernels as bait then all you have to do is sit back and hold on as these fish can realy put up a show on lite gear, the lighter the tackle the more chance you have of hooking into a good bag of carp (so i have found) in saying this no fishing is a slam dunk so look around for some likley spots and keep tryin untill you crack it.
Redfin on the other hand seem to be the main catch in LBG although most fish caught ae no bigger than 20cm there are some big reddies to be had my best to date is around the 2 kilo mark but have herd of bigger (WOW) now these bigger fish can be hard to locate, My larger reddies have came from shaded banks after a hot day or trolling deep divers for natives but i found if you caught a large reddie in a area there would be more there (not sure if they school in size lots but this does seem to be the case in LBG) my no 1 reddie lure at the moment is a ecogear sx40 colour 307 (i have caught a 3 kilo golden on this as well) but these red in are agressive and seem to hit just about anything.
Now this is where the fun starts LBG natives i have fished hard for these fish over the coarse of the past few months and it took alot of hours on the water before i had any sucsess, in saying this i never set the fishing world on fire this year i caught about 20 golden perch and only 2 cod for the year and im out alot but am happy to share what i have lernt, Spinner/chatter baits are the go and i have caught both my cod on a purple/black spinnerbait, both my cod where caught right on dark casting into snags (both fish hit the lure on the drop) my best fish was around 6 kilo as for the goldens a big lure is not always the way to go i caught alot of my fish targeting redfin in the snags (and had some big bust ups doing this) try everything in your box of triks you might get a shock my other half caught a 4 kilo golden using a 5cm jerk shad in very shallow water (great to watch) but most of my fish came from using buzzbaits (as small as you can find them) on or after dark on anyone of LBG weedy banks.
I am not claming to know it all or even half of it, but i have caught fish using the above methods and hope it helps you, and if anyone has any tips for me it would be a great help as our sport demands that we never stop learning i think thats why so many of us love it so much, tight lines guys im off to catch a carp in Canberras carp out.
