I have not fished the area a lot, but have fished Queenscliff a few times - a lot of squid get caught there every year but it does see a lot of fishing pressure. Sometimes it is hard to get a spot on the pier.
You can get away with a regular spinning rod/reel to cast and retrieve artificial jigs.
If any of the big piers in town have squid ink marks on them, then that is a good sign that they are productive <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />
