Gday Ben, I used to squid a lot land based, but now most of my squidding is done from the yak in fairly shallow water from 1-4m deep. I fish my jigs a lot like I do SPs - give the jig a flick or two, then let it sink for a few seconds, then raise the rod tip slowly, then let it sink. With the little Emeraldas 1.8 jigs I let them sink for a long time before I start the retrieve. Every now and again I give the reel handle a few really quick turns then stop and wait a few seconds (like the 'burn and kill' technique used by lure fishos). I find this often provokes a strike, especially when the squid are finicky or shy, and just watching the jig but not grabbing it - when they see the jig race away from them then stop dead it can turn them on big time <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

I also get quite a lot of squid by cheating <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> - drifting over the shallow weed beds, with a jig under a float about a metre off the bottom, while I cast/retrieve another jig, or a soft plastic for flatties etc. Some days I get all my squid on the cast/retrieved jig, and some days they're all on the float rig, sometimes it's a mix of the two. Go figure! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='

Bent-rod, I have seen the behaviour you mentioned when walking the shallows at night with a prawn light - I thought at the time that the squid might be trying to imitate floating weed to attract small baitfish, there was a lot of weed around at the time that looked very similar to the squid's posture.
