Not in Oz but I use a dedicated squid rod. A Daiwa InFeet XTreme EG83M.
Actually, they are quite stiff to give a sharp dart to the jig. Alot of them are very light, though there is some debate as to which is better. Some say a light rod allows you to jerk all day without tiring while others say the weight of a heavy rod has more momentum and needs less energy to jerk. I guess there is less shock to the body with a heavy rod too.
Before I got this one I used a ¥4,000 (NZ$55) one. I haven't used many rods so I can't really explain the difference but the ¥18,000 (NZ$220) Daiwa catches a lot more squid.
