welcome to the forum. you can buy squid jigs off ebay so i would recommend trying that. but also making your own jigs would be a good hobby. i am surprised more people are not trying to make their own squid jigs!!!
as for the long toms eating or attacking the baited jags, i agree that might be a problem. however as i understand it those fish tend to hang around on the surface so maybe if you set the baited jag deep enough (under your float) they would leave them alone. just an idea.
