I've seen license plates at GI bridge from NJ, NY or NH so you certainly not alone. I'm from LI, so it's 3.5 hr or 150 mi each way. If you look at the gas cost, fishing is certainly not worth in general because you can buy them much cheaper in local shop/supermarket. But if you look at it as a hobby and an experience, then it is totally different. People drives 6 hours to salmon river (upstate NY) in Fall to fish the salmon run there. I did it once and never go back.
Saturday is usually the busiest time there at GI bridge and you need to get there around noon to secure a free parking space (out of the 12 free ones) and if the cop is not enforcing the 2-hour limit. If I were you, I'll drive out there Friday night, this way you get yourself 2 prime fishing nights. Daytime fishing there is generally very slow, unless the run breaks wide-open.
