The bait is getting thicker (and Leo's getting larger). Soon the fish will follow. Reports of squid around the west side of the Vineyard and the east end of the Canal. Amy at Sports Port is selling a lot of squid jigs as anglers gear up. Herring are thick at the runs and in the Canal. Some female herring are busy laying as many as 100,000 eggs right now, and when they return to the sea, the stripers will be waiting. You should be, too.
1. Buzzards Bay /Cape Cod Canal â Best saltwater action this week. We've got some squid, lots of herring, and more schoolies are arriving on every tide. With water temps still chilly â upper 40s â there probably won't be huge landings this week. Consider the fish who are here now a mere vanguard, millions more are on their tails. Tautog are biting around Woods Hole and some lobstermen are reporting them in their traps as well. Somewhat rare these days, but terrific table fare, catch the 'togs during the day, at slack tide, around rock piles and other structure on sea clams.
2. Islands â Schoolies around the west end of the Vineyard, chasing some squid, but nothing too crazy. Several ponds here have been stocked. Yep, pretty slow on the Vineyard so far. On Nantucket ... well, they do have a lovely daffodil festival this weekend.
3. Nantucket Sound â When the squid move in, Middle Ground will heat up. For now you might try the rocks around Bishop and Clerks, but it's slim pickings.
