You guys think 1 flourescent green submersible will suffice off the boat? I have a generator, but I don't really want to be running it on the boat with flood lights, etc.

Hey Stripey, Is it one of those 3 oe 4 ft green flurescents? Those work great and is all you'll need. I run one of those submersible lights made by Brinkman (19.95) and they already have 12v battery clips attached to the cord. We bring a few deep cycle batteries and they work just fine for several hours. Also we have floodlights attached to a bar that is attatched to a pole that goes in our rod holders on the boat and they do the trick too. The floods are run by the 12v batteries as well. Snaildarter

No disrespect to Tatonka, and you can check with others on the web, but I.M.O. if you're fishing at night and don't have at least a Coleman lantern (less than $20.00 at Wal Mart) your chances of catching squid are pretty slim (been there, done that) that's why, if you go to where the squid are running in Newport you'll see the lanterns everywhere. As far as what weights to hang beneath the jigs, you might need "1-2 ozs" off the bridge (depending on the tide) but off the wall you'll only need maybe 1/4 oz or so, so I would bring a range of sinkers and tie the sinker 12"-18" or so beneath your lowest jig. In my experience, there's no need to lower your sinker and jigs all the way to the bottom. If you do they're much more likely to be snagged and lost. Some (including myself) believe that the lights are more attractive and concentrate the squid more on dark nights when there's little or no moon, so If you can only come once or twice during the short 2-4 wks the squid are here, one of the determining factors for me would be to make at least one of those visits on one of those dark nights. GOD bless

Snail, thanks for the advice. won't be long now. That is what I have, with the battery clips.

Becca, Good advice above. I would add: bring a 5 gallon bucket for your squid and a lid for your seat, a warm hat (the wind off the not yet 50 degree water is cold), coffee (irish works best for me), a small flashlite and knife for rigging /'re-rigging, a rag, and a stick to beat back the rif-raff, (No need to worry about the guys from MA, we're all saints). Check out AT Grimaldi's thread and print yourself out a name tag so we all will know to offer you our help.
Hey all, I got the replacement generator up and running but its only 1200 Watts. I can run 2-500W Halogens and a 300W halogen (yeah, Iknow that's 1300) but I still hve 1150W of lites without power. If anyone has excess generator capacity maybe we could buddy up. I usually fish by the park bulkhead or the bridge approach.

are you guys just using gas lanterns hanging off the surface of the water or actually using waterproof lighting that sits in the water to attract the squid??
if you are using waterproof lighting what brand do you recommend??
6.)Lights help, but, not required.
-Tatonka-
Let me rephrase this. Lights indeed help. However, since there is so many people using lights at night you often can find someone nice or fish near someone w/ a light. That way you wont have to spend extra $$ as a beginner. (Most on the forum would be happy to share a light <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> ) Second, the first street light on the causeway shines over part of the water. Happy Squiding.
I bought a nice, brand new 1200 watt 4 stroke generator at the boat show in Worchester recently for $156.00 (approx. $161.00 with Mass. tax) with a 1 yr warranty and free delivery to R.I. and probably Mass.
The generator has a handle on top which makes it fairly easy to carry (weighs about 50 lbs.). I haven't started it up yet but the rep told me the noise level is only 52 db. I called him and told him we are a "group" and he said he will sell it to you guys for the same price. Anybody interested?
Hey Brad, That sounds like a pretty good deal. What is the company and where is it located? Does it have to be shipped or can I pick it up myself? I just want to make sure i'm ready for the first big run. Thanks again for the info!

That sounds like a pretty good deal. What is the company and where is it located? Does it have to be shipped or can I pick it up myself? I just want to make sure i'm ready for the first big run. Thanks again for the info!
The company is RMP Powertrain Solutions in Northboro, MA 01532. My contact was Pete Buxton, and you can reach him at (800) 541-5575, ext 3001, Cell: (978) 808-7761, or email him at pbuxton@rmpparts.com. If you tell him that you're in the same group as Brad Speck he said you could get the generator at the Boat Show price ($156.00 & Mass tax of 5%). He delivered it to my house in R.I. for free and said that he travels all over or could ship it to a Ford dealer for free and we pick it up there, but you'll have to work out the details with him. As I said in a previous post, it's 1200 watts, 4-stroke and new. I started up mine tonight and it ran well, was about as quiet as other 4-strokes I've heard at G.I. but I still would want it about 30 ft away or so if I was going to run it for any length of time. He called it a "Briefcase Style" generator because it has a handle on top to carry it. It only has one plug in for output but you could get a device like used in a house to plug in two or more lights and the twin 500 & 600 watt light set ups I've seen at Home Depot etc both run off a single plug with some kind of connector box on the frame.
