merchantmarine, I don't think I can afford van staal, aslo the CFO would not let me do it, *yet*

I'm a shimano fan, so I actually have my eye on Saragosa reel, but since it's so new, try to stay on the side line for now.

Point Judith uh?, then it's getting very close to new port ...

Get your gears up guys.
Thanks a lot for the input sfoxnh and tatonka. I picked up about 20 jigs in all for me and the people I fish with, so I got a few pinks, blues, greens, and luminous greens. I only bought one of the flashdancers because they were a little more expensive. I'll be sure to let you know if it works. I'm really interested to find out how well your duel pheromone skin jigs work. I can't wait for this season to start. Best of luck to you all!
I've got a cpl of shimano stradics, a 4000 and 2 5000's as well as a cabo 40 and 50. They're great and they take alot of heavy use and abuse with very littel maintenance required. Kittery trading post was closing out stradic 5000's for $99 last week, that's agreat price. I paid $130 retail. Stay away from the quantum Boca, the Cabo is MUCH better for another $60.

I think we'll be squiding and catching by next week at GI

If you want a good and easy reel to clean look no farther the Penn z series. Its no longer made put there are tons out there. I have the 707s, 706s , 704, 710, 712,714, 716. I use the 714 for squid fishing. But there is a another reel I love for squid fishing and its the Mitchell 304 which can be had for 10-15 and built like to last. I know its obvious but I like old school gear <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />
I second Busterblue, The Cabo is worth the extra $$$

And....shipwrecked, I couldn,t agree more. I also own a handful of Penn reels. You really cant go wrong. One of my oldest a favorite reels is my 704z. I have caught alot of fish on that tank. Had it for 15 years and still works like a charm. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/fishing.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

I just added a couple 707s this weekend and going to add a NIB 706z thursday to the stable. Between Mitchells and Penn z series I dont know which I love more. These are reels that will last you a lifetime <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> My dad had a Mitchell for 30 yrs never cleaned it and it worked as fine as the day he bought it.
anyone heading to the bridge this weekend? i think me and a couple guys are going next weekend but if anyone goes please give us an update on the fishing so we know what to expect. thanks
temp peaked at 46 yesterday, and started today 1 degree higher then yesterday with another warm day forecast we're getting closer and my son has next week off from school.

I am curious if someone has more information for me on squid runs. As with all other s/w species, I assume that tide is critical. Do squid come into the shallows mostly under the cover of darkness and ride the tide in to mate, and leave with the outgoing? Are stronger runs during moon tides? Thanks for your help.
The strongest run of the day happens 5 minutes after you leave <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> so drive around the block and sneak back when they're not looking. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

seriously I have not found a cycle to the heaviest run of the day yet. I've done as well at the bottom of the tide as the top, the slack as well as mid tide. What I have found are countless firm opinions as to what state of the tide is best (and I'm sure you'll get them)

How true, every time I leave at 11PM, next day I come back and asked, they told me it runs at 11:15PM .... crap!!
HAHA! This is exactly why I asked, I put some though into it last year, but I was unable to establish any consistancy. They seemed to show up when they wanted, usually while I was not there!

Yes you just have to be there at the right time when they are biting no matter what you throw at them. I dont think anyone has fully understood why they bite in a frenzy and sometimes they wont even look at your jig.
Hey guys, I will be in the Newport area tonight. I going to dip my lines for a few hours and see if I get a bite. I'll keep you posted.

Tatonka.
Good Luck!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/images2.jpg' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />
Don't start any rumors now <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' /> we want proof if you get anything <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> j/k

Good luck.
I hope they show up earlier than last year...I don't think I can wait that long!
These are the date according to squidfish.net website:

Apr 27 2004

Apr 20 2005

Apr 22 2006

May 1 2007

So if you are really itchy, then pack your gear next 2 weeks, for those live too far, the safest bet is first week of May.
Sfox sorry I have to argue with you. First week of may is WAY OFF. I would say beggining of the last week of april! But according to what data I've collected. I've never starting catching squid later then the April 25.
