GPS Marks - VIC

I like the idea of swapping GPS marks for calamari.



I know that calamari move around but GPS allows me to home in on the approximate location.



I want to try Queenscliff but I'm not sure where the best spot is. Similarly with Flinders etc.

The calamari are there at the moment, all you have to do is drift amongst the pack of boats cause thats where they usually are. From work i look at : [url="http://www.vicchannels.vic.gov.au/shipping/webcams/"]Point Lonsdale Webcam[/url]



You may see myself, John (with his plate alloy boat Gone Fishing Charters) or Simon. Have a look through the queenscliff reports and you'll have a few places to try, dont really need any GPS marks for some of them <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I fished Queenscliff for the first time about a month ago with no GPS data and just drifted over the shallow areas of Lonsdale bight after not doing any good in the deep with the other 60 or so boats. After about 30 min of drifting with no squid one of my two rods which I'd left in the rod holder buckled over and I was on. Five nice squid later I went and picked a friend from Queenscliff pier and went back to where I hooked the first squid which I marked as soon as I hooked that first squid. We got another 8 using that mark as a guide. That same spot worked for me the next time I went out but since then it seems to be irrelevant. I'm catching them all over the place. Aok is right-they move around and GPS is great on the day if their schooling but on subsequent trips you just start all over again.



Very quiet on Sat arvo. Went out for a couple of hours B4 dark with my brother in law. He got one small one and I got one small and one 2kg specimen.



Let me know if you still want a mark and I'll post it.



By the way I'm hoping to get into some snapper this year over your way so if you have any good marks they would be much appreciated.

I will try Queenscliff when I go over the other side although I don't like fishing deep in fast flowing water.



I'll post you some good GPS marks for schnapper as I get onto them.



I'm currently fishing off Mornington on the Ansetts mark and have brought in 10 schnapper between 2.4kg to 6kg over the last 2 weeks.



Will post the Ansett GPS mark soon.

The "deep water" area for queenscliff clamari is around the 13m mark i have found, it can vary. If you fish close to shore we are talking ~3m deep but you need to keep an eye on how close you are to the waves breaking on the beach <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />



I have got a couple of marks of mornington in ~20m where i caught some snapper last year, i'll pass them on.

Guys, the squid at Q.cliff are spawning and rarely move far from their spawn and as such marks are very important.

The thing to remember though is there are lots of different spawn lays thus you can catch the odd one from each patch you drift past. Better though is to pin point the spawn ( and I mean PIN POINT!!!) anchor just up tide and you will bomb them , no matter what stage of the tide they will be there and hungry.

Hi John,



Work and weekend commitments have all helped keep me away from one of my favourite fishing haunts, good'ol Queenscliff.



I wasn't sure whether the calamari stay in a specific area or slowly move around, next time i'll mark the spot when we catch one and then go back and anchor up tide as you suggest.
