Squidbaits Too Big Or Too Small/which Baits?

I recently bought a baitjig that is 12.5 inches long with large spikes on the end ( the ones you skewer through the fish)



Now I wanted to hear about whether the size of the bait I use matters, or which baits work best? I used a pike 12 inches but no luck. I switched to a small whiting, no success...one of those days where you could see the squid but not catch them (shy), which was why I tried baitfishing.

Generally I try and use a fish that's about 20cm (8 inches) long on a skewer (tommy rough and mullet are my favorites), but using a fairly big fish won't put them off in my experience. The last few times I've been fishing I've hooked a few fairly large pike (40-45cm), some of which have come up with fairly small squid attached to them (about half the size of the pike). One of them was so hungry that he refused to give up the pike, even when I netted him!



It sounds like your experience was , as you said, 'one of those days' when they want to look but not touch.

Thanks Jazman. still dont seem to get any with a baited jig but I think I found another way they don't seem to take anything but my NEW SILVER jig. oh well. I continue to leave a bait hanging over the edge just incase I get a school follow the jig in. Maybe they will gab it!

Last time I try use bait jig 15.5 Cm (about 6 inches) long and use brain pilchard for bait. First time cut the pilchard tail and skew from the tail to the head. It's work very well. I caught few big ones and also one cuttlefish.
