I recently took forum member Mike (Flounderpirate) out for some squidding action off Mordialloc (Port Philip Bay, VIC). I fished from my kayak, and he fished old school, from my trusty rowboat. I've attached some pictures, I think the final tally for the day was 7 squid, of which mike caught 4 (including his first squid ever, caught on a pink yamashita jig, in the picture below). I think he looks a bit like a pirate, what do you think? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

nice work guys. love the rowboat. now thats a hardcore way to get to where your fishing.
i'm hoping to get out and try and catch some squid over the next few weeks or so. its just finding the time thats hard also got some cool snorkeling gear for by birthday, so i might have to give spearing a go over teh next few weeks. i think its meant to get hot this week, so maybe towards the end of this week will be OK and that damn wind. i wish it would go away. i want more flounder for the freezer cheers

Fresh air, tight lines, scales, slime and fins, 'tis the salty sea dog life for me. Arrrgh!

where do you pick up a little row boat like that, and what should you expect to pay?
seems like a great idea to me.

Dunno, best to ask Jazman.
Any body heard of snapper news in the bay, say Altona way? Are there any squid about at this time?

i've heard and seen snapper caught at mornington pier. still a little early i think for most of the bay
not sure about squid. last i was at mornington, i only saw a small one caught

The snapper are getting along very nicely, we got a few pinkies to 40cm on Saturday morning, and one guy got a 55cm beauty on a soft plastic. I also picked up 2 nice squid (hoods about 25cm). I have heard the 16m line from Carrum to Beaumaris is worth a look. We also saw a a boat netting a much bigger fish (estimated 5-6kg) in quite close off Sandringham. I haven't heard any reports for the top end of the bay Mike, except that he pinkies are biting off the back of the Williamstown football ground.
Not sure what you'd expect to pay for a rowboat Steeny, that one's been in the family for about 30 years <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Ebay or the trading post might be worth a look? Or better still, get a kayak!

I found this rowboat on Ebay Steeny, might be a little bit small for you though <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

it is in great condition, and the price is right.
i wonder if it floats? i would dearly love a fishing kayak, but alas, funds are simply not available. I wish this wind would dissapear so i could test my new snorkeling gear. went to mount martha today, but it was ridiculous. perhaps next weeks

Yes the wind has been annoying <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
This rowboat might be a bit more suitable: http://www.capacitysports.com.au/dinghies/

Ha Har...argh
Jazman, yer a funny old seadog. This wind has been a real blight to the floundering effort. Thanks fer the heartening news that the snapper are coming at least. I've yet to catch a squid at altona.... but once this engagement preparation is over, I will take Mary and her sister fishin'...aargh.

Mike, those spots where you did well on the pinkies around altona last season will begin to fire up real soon, if they haven't already <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> !!!
A friend of mine hooked up a 2m thresher shark from his kayak last weekend INSIDE PORT PHILIP BAY!! You can probably guess what I'm planning now <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

100% serious report mate, it jumped a couple of times next to the yak, at which point he cut the line and paddled for shore as fast as he could <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
I'm fishing Ricketts Point on Saturday afternoon, then I'll hit the Thresher spot sunday morning with a live bait and crossed fingers <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
20-10-2006, 03:44 PM
how exactly are you going to get the thresher in the kayak? EEEK! maybe you can tow it back to land? take some rope maybe!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> hopefully it wont pull the kayak under!
20-10-2006, 05:22 PM
Some guys from the US have been targetting threshers from kayaks for a few years (see DVD below), so it can be done - doing it safely will be the tricky part!
