I thought I'd post these photos of some squid my girlfriend and I have caught from our kayaks over the past few months. All were caught at various spots along the eastern side of Port Philip Bay.
Less than 500m offshore, the reason there are so many boats is that the location was Black Rock on a Saturday morning <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Busier than Burke St most weekends <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> It's a shame the fishing is so good there! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
maybe she can take up rowing and you can do the trolling? :-) i know rowing is popular with some of the ladies. then you will save fuel too! LOL <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Mike, you need to take her father out fishing first, just you and him. Show him what a safe and competent captain you are (so no running aground, and don't order him round and make him swab the decks <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> ). It will be even better if you can put him onto some fish. Then he shouldn't have any worries about you taking his daughters out for a day on the bay <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />
As for the squid around Altona - all my squid in the past month or so have been 'bycatch' from just having a jig in the water while targetting flathead or pinkies. I've been getting a couple every trip. So I reckon you should just get out there and drift over your favorite flathead spot, throw that brown hayabusa jig out and keep half an eye on it <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Another thing, word on the street is that the gars are starting to fire up, and that they are the best bait for bigger snapper at the moment <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Me Brother got his boating licence last week an' is keen to captain me boat after he finishes his exams.
So a float fer the gars, a jig for the squid, a flattie soft plastic and a snapper rod. Hmmmm...I don't know if I can fit Mary on the boat......Haharrgh.
Fresh air, tight lines, scales, slime and fins, 'tis the salty sea dog life for me. Arrrgh!
Sounds like a plan mate. I bought a bulk load of silverfish at the market to use as garfish bait, I bagged them up in small bags, let me know if you're coming past work one night and I'll bring some in for you. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

i worked in canberra for a few months. i went fishing after work quite often in the lake i mentioned. i caught some very large carp on fly. millions of small redfins....also i got one yellowbellly on a celta bladed lure.
the trout fishing around there is also ok though you need to drive a bit further out of town. lake jindabyne is a couple of hours drive i think.

I'm not too sure about eating fish from there though <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
I've been reading about Jindabyne and Eucumbene - I reckon trolling from the kayak or bait fishing for trout at night would be really fun. There is also a place called Durras (spelling?) which is apparently 2-3 hours drive away, on the coast, which has good fishing. yeah i would not eat any of the fish out of burley griffen. apparently it is badly polluted. though it doesn't look that bad to me.
maybe you could even take the kayaks down some rivers? not sure if they are designed for that or not. though you will need someone to drive the car to the exit point so you will need at least 2 people. i think its about 2 hours drive to the coast from canberra. i imagine they have a couple of flounder there! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

We did catch 1 squid from our kayaks on the weekend, but it was the SALMON which got us more excited. Here are a couple of pics (taken by fellow kayak fishing enthusiast Rod) of me and my girlfriend hooked up on salmon at the same time, and the fish after we netted them. Thanks Glen, the school was not really that easy to find, they were 'busting up' for very short periods (like 5 seconds) then heading down deep. The sounder came in very handy. Most fish were hooked near the bottom in 4-6 metres of water. I caught the 56cm fish trolling a 3.5m diving minnow in 5m of water, my girlfriend caught hers working a 3" soft plastic minnow down deep.
