Giant Squid Season In 2006
#1
Recent report from the San Diego UNION-TRIBUNE January 17, 2006

Quote:Get those oversized, glow-in-the-dark squid jigs ready for the oversized Humboldt squid. Steve Ross on his boat, Bad Dog, fishing at the Banda Bank off Ensenada, reported catching seven Humboldt jumbos to 40 pounds. If the monster mollusks follow last year's pattern, they're due here any day. They were washing up on San Diego beaches at this time last year, and shortly after that, the sport fleet made the most of the fishery by targeting them on wild and wooly twilight and night trips to the 9-Mile Bank.

Anglers Score Big on Rockfish Opener

Wednesday, March 08, 2006

By Bob Vanian

Quote:Private boater Steve Ross of Bad Dog had an exciting report about fishing for giant squid on a recent trip out of Marina Coral. Ross reported that they had the squid bite well for them in the hours shortly after dark and that the catch for anglers aboard limited out by 9:00 p.m. The squid were in the 30-to-40-lb. class and were biting well about 100 feet below the surface on Squidfishing.com jigs and Ahi Squid Jigs.

Fishing report

Quote:Half Moon Bay: Rockfishing is good from the Farallons to Pigeon Point and pretty much everywhere else. A Tuesday trip returned with 25 limits of rock cod and 29 lings to 13 pounds. Lings are showing better at the Farallons than they are at spots closer to shore. The elusive Humboldt squid came in a little early this year, and some lucky anglers were able to reel in a few working in 900 feet of water 24 miles out of Half Moon Bay. Huck Finn Sportfishing (650) 726-7133, Huli Cat Sportfishing (650) 726-2926.

Quote:Ocean - The mystery of the disappearing salmon continues. Fishing outside the Golden Gate and inside at Paradise is nothing short of terrible. Rockfish and lingcod pick up the slack with absolutely fantastic action at the Farallon Islands, Deep Reef and Cordell Banks. The Huli Cat out of Half Moon Bay is targeting giant Humboldt squid on combination trips for rockfish. Dungeness crab season opens Oct. 28, so anglers can attempt to catch their own cioppino dinner on a single outing. Information: (415) 674-3474 (Sausalito); (510) 849-2727 (Berkeley); (707) 875-3344 (Bodega Bay); (650) 726-2629 (Half Moon Bay)

Quote:Actually, the one sign that it is winter is the migration of those jumbo-sized Humboldt squid, which are showing up offshore from below Ensenada to off the coast of Mendocino in Northern California. The monster mollusks are biting in good numbers for twilight trips out of local landings.
