Was at the altona pier on saturday or sunday night. There's guys there most nights catching squid. I just brought a green squid jig and tried my luck. I could see the little barstards, big black/brown ones, coasting along the pier. But they just had absolutely no interest in the jig at all. Thats funny cos in the past (York peninsula in S.A.)I've had no problems catching squid on jigs, they just go for them suicidally, and if you can see them, catching them is just easy.
Most of the other guys on the pier weren't using jigs.
They were using huge pilchards and phosphorescent floats. I've never gone for squid using anything other than jigs, could someone help me - how do you rig that rig up?Do the squid at Altona ever go for jigs?
I'm not called crapfisherman for nothing. LOL.
Also, I've seen guys catch alot of salmon off that pier too, I'm not sure whether they use bait or lures though.

Thanks squidkiller, and thanks glen.
I'm going to go and buy some more tackle tomorrow, and probably will head on down to Altona tomorrow night or the next night and try my luck again. I probably won't go if its too windy or if its pissing down though.
I don't know what the squid were that I saw, but they were darker coloured than calamari and the guys there said they were probably arrow squid.
If I go fishing I'll look out for you, squidkiller!

glorious conditions sunday arvo so headed out with a mate to test these reports of squillions of squid around Altona.
We worked bloody hard from 14:30 to 17:30 and only managed 5 squid. We tried around pt cook marker and out from the altona pier.
I was fishing with a shrimphunter and my mate with a.... razorback. And he kicked my butt!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' />
