Pittwater - NSW

Went to Pittwater last Sat and pick up 2 of the biggest calamari squid I have ever seen. I got them on light outfit and they took drag in short bursts !! I thought I hooked some stupid baby stingray.



The measurement for only the body excluding head and tentacles was 33cm and 31cm, with the head theyd probably be half a metre. Good squid for Sydney waters <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Agreed, this board is too thin on NSW reports. Shame, as it's an excellent site. While I do think Southern states probably have more squid action, there are still a lot of fisherfolk up here who squid.

As an undoubtedly guilty "lurker" on this (and many other fishing-related) sites, I rarely post. Yet I also have not squidded for ages, so when I fire up again over the summer I will try to share reports (even of unsuccessful trips).

I presume you caught those beasts between the 'joey and Palm Beach? I live part time on the Cantral Coast, so I'll be doing a spot of boating that way over summer. I'm keen to try that area from the boat. I also occasionally catch the Ettalong ferry to Palmy, and have often wondered if it's worth throwing a lure in around that wharf. Any thoughts?

Sounds too good down there Glen. Hopefully I'll be getting in some NSW south coast fishing early Jan. I did well down there on the snapper and flathead at Easter, I'll be doing my homework and finding the squid spots this time. Anyone out there recommend boat and shore options near Bendalong and Broulee? So far Bendalong boat ramp and Ulladulla Harbour walls look good.

Gday fellas

Had a good hour or two squiding session last night at about 10pm tide was up pretty high and water was flat and clear,

started off slow didnt see anything for a while (wharf has lights on it so sight squiding works well)

but eventually a medium size sth cal. came in around the same size as one from the night before.

I was going to leave but on one of my "last casts" another one about the same size grabbed my green 2.5 g jig so it was back to squidin for another hour which produced 2 more medium and 1 small squid which is a pb for me at my spot which i have been fishing for around 15yrs (im only 19 so its a long time for me)

anyway on the way home i thought i might as well jump the fence at the yacht club and try this spot which usually hold alot of squid under the spot lights.

stayed out for about 20min pulling in 2 more med. squid

a new pb of 7

and some nice crumbed squid for a day or 2.

ps. Big squid are nowhere to be seen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

the colder weather turns on the big ones at my spots ehjust less of them.

caught couple of decent sized squids at palm beach (bit inside the pool where the rocks are)



tried the palm beach warf and spend 3 hours and caught a flu!



No sign of squid not even squi!!!



Though I gotta admit people there told me tide of down and thus no squid but during the high tide theres usually plenty.

ok correction i went again, this time saw heaps of squid (higher tide) but none were biting <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' /> some followed



on my last cast caught an octopus!!..



infact seems like there are heaps of them here are well... as few times it gets caught in the weed (which i thought it was) but when you pull it out you can see small bits of octopus legs etc.. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

fished palm beach wharf couple weeks ago, i think sat 21 may and caught 3 nice sized squid,and lost one jig to a hungry huge occi.. i fished the top of the tide last night in light rain at taylors pt and scored a massive one on a pilly on a spike within 2 minutes.35cm hood and big eyes.kept me fishin in the rain but didnt look like getting anything but numonia from the drizzly rain.pulled the pin after about an hour and went home.lucky i only live 5 min down the road... gee that hot shower felt good.....

Hi fisho's, my latetest is Ive finally upgrades from a kayak to a 4.5 tinnie, it's great to get around a lot faster and drier.



Question: Is there a prefered burley that squid prefer????.



I jigged for squid around flint and steel at high tide last week without a hit. Maybe I'll try a pillie on a float the next time out.



Caught this wopper of an occy and froze it for the next outing. do you skin the occy before using it as bait???

A guy I work with fishes Pittwater regularly and often picks up squid as a by catch. They drift for flathead as well as tossing out SP's. The squid often attack the bait or lures and follow them to the surface where the guys always have a squid jig rigged up ready. The purpose in telling you this is that he reports a large number of calamari squid in Pittwater at the moment including some of the biggest he has ever seen ( don't have any weights or dimensions though). He said that they are also finding some of them (or being found by them) on the sand bottom, well away from the weed beds.



I went out last Saturday ( for the first time in 5 months) to middle harbour and caught 3 nice calamari at Manly, but next time I'm going to Pittwater!!

Thanks for the info Colin! Any idea which part of of pitt water did your mate go? is it possible to catch big squids in pitt water land based?

High Richard,



They normally drift from the Barrenjoey end inwards (I don't have a map with me so I can't be more precise) This is relatively narrow neck but a good long drift, mostly over a sand bottom. On the Palm beach side there is a long beach ( probably called Barrenjoy??) and at the Barrenjoey Head end there are a number of boats moored. This is a very weedy area where I have caught squid previously. I imagine you can get there on foot but you would have to check on a map. Sorry to be so vague but tomorrow I'll pull out a map and see if I can be precise.
