Screwpile Jetty at Granite Island, SA

hey ppl, i'd just like to say how hard I have found squid fishing in the first two days ive tried it. I bought a green jarvis walker prawn style size 4 imitation jig for $3 australian which i thought was good and cheap. The first day I fished off the screwpile jetty at granite island, south australia. I had no luck, though it was mid afternoon. I thought okay, better luck tomorrow. The next day I went down to the Port Noarlunga Jetty at 7:00am in the morning. There were some squid about, as I saw afew people wind some in with imitation jigs. I had no luck though attracting a single squid. I tried to copy the style off the successful squid fisherman, but with no luck. I tried for several hours, no results. That night I went back at about 7:00pm at night to the same jetty. Once again afew people landed some squid. I had no luck once again. This got really frustrating because I cast and wound out thousands of times in numerously different locations along the jetty and as soon as this guy gets there who was a total amateur and didnt kno what he was doing, he caught a massive pink squid. I came home severely frustrated with a sore wrist to nurse the next day. A little injury I call RSJ. Repetitive Squid Jigging.



Can anyone please give me advice on what I may have been doing wrong, was it possibly my technique, colour of my jig (most of the successful squidders seemed tohave pink jigs) or am i doomed to never catch a squid! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/as.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

Hey Jack,



Im only commenting because i felt the same way as you a number of times. If you observe what squid jig the 'locals' are using and gauge off that you will be bound to get one - your jig may be too big. Just keep trying and pick up some tips off this site and im sure you'll be hauling them up in no time.

thanks for the advice, I thought my jig may have been too big too. Today I bought a size 3 pink razorback jig.

dude just keep at it. i found out first hand. i was squidding for about 2 hrs and nothing. i deiced to leave a guy rocks up as i was putting stuff into car and lands a squid within 5 mins. now how is that for luck. try different jigs. different size or ask the other blokes wat they are using.

Gday Jack, I agree with RX3-boi.

Also I have found the best all round jig to be size 2 - small I know, but I've caught some rippers with this size.

If you don't mind spending a little bit extra, yamashita jigs have caught me more squid than any other brand I've tried. They are $10-12 each, which is a bit more expensive than jarvis walker or razorback jigs, but in my opinion the extra expense is justified. I have had best success with yamashita size 2.0 in green, pink or orange.

on a recent squidding trip myself and my squidding partner pulled in maybe 15-20 decent squid off a small jetty over a period of about 3 hours while the guy 10 meters down the jetty didnt even get a touch

Hey jack!!

The screwpile jetty at Victor is very void of squid. Ive never caught one there. There are a few places i would try first. One is the bluff - it holds the most squid in victor. You could also try the little rocky area about halfway between the screwpile jetty and causeway as there are some massive squid taken from there at times - also the causeway lights attract them at night!!

But i would personally make the 40min trip to Cape Jervis!!!

hryjac i sarted of te same as u i found out carrying smaller jigs helped me i was using jigs twice the size i was meant to and paid for it as this 5 year old and his dad came and caught f squid in 20 mins compared to my nothin in 6 hours. i find the size 2 the better opition. i also caught my first 2kg squid on a size 2 and almost lost it as the line broike as it was brought up on the jetty. well catch ya later mate. happy squiding.
