Hi guys,



I went for my first spearing session for the season at La Parouse on Sunday the 26th.



I managed 3 nice octopus and a flathead. Also saw a big crab, but as it was full of eggs, i let it be.

Saw plenty of little arrow squid around , but they were too spooky to close in on them. Next time i'll bring a squid jig with me!!



Anyway looks like its gonna be a good season this year.

hi lbgfreak1,



with the occy, i usually cut the end bit of the legs and keep it for bait.

now with the rest of the occy, the trouble starts now:

i throw/smash it on the rocks for a good 20-30 times to break all the mussels and tenderize it.

then i rub/scrub the occy on the rocks for 10-15 minutes, to remove all the sticky saliva it has on its skin, while washing it with sea water every now and then.



after all that trouble, its ready to be cooked and eaten.

usually i bbq them, or my mum cooks them in the pot with red tomato sause and potatoes.(a favorite greek dish!)

hi jazman,



most of the occys that i shoot are in holes. i can spot an occy hole very easily as it allways has shells and pebbles around it, with a small opening in the centre and the occy eyes sticking out. i will try and take a picture of one next time, so you all know what i mean.

you have to aim pretty well in the centre though!

i have lost a few occys with my prong not being able to penetrate it.

reason? a pebble or shell happens to go between the occy and my prong!



the best is when you get them in the open, as they have nowhere to go.

on one occasion i had one that curled into the shape of a rope, as it tried to elude me.

and another one had lifted it legs up and was swinging them left and right trying to imitate seaweed. looked more like a scene from the "karate kid" to me !!!

Hi Profesas

Yeah, underwater pics of occys would be great! I mostly see them while diving for crays, and always in holes or ledges. They do some crazy stuff, I have seen them change color to imitate weed or rock, and also try to grab a crayfish from my hand!

hi guys,



i got some pics from my first spearing days.

this is a small occy that was hiding in the hole, but i let it be as it was a bit small!

here there is a bigger one which i got with my handspear.



when you spear an occy it usually glues itself on the rocks.

i have found that if you wait for 10-15 minutes , it usually comes out of the rocks by itself with the spear. when its in the clear with no rocks around it, you then just grab the spear and lift it.



here in the pic, i was waiting for it to come out by itself. as you can see it slowly comes out together with the spear!

i have updated on my equipment since then, and

i just bought a 1use underwater camera from kmart.

i will take some more pics from my spearfishing sessions this summer and post more pics in the near future.
