Anyone ever try a squid spike? Seen them online but I've never seen them in the shops. Do they work for loligos? Anyone know a good place online to order them? Thanks.Â

They are for sale on ebay. They are for killing the squid, will work on any of them on the east coast. I am sure any old ice pick would work. May be small for humbolt squid. I have never seen a need for one, maybe I am just neanderthal and let them die in the bucket if they will be frozen, used fresh dead or eaten fresh. We do keep them alive in keepers for livelining albies from the shore.

I've seen pictures online but I literally can't find one for sale. It looks like a needle with a squid hook attached on the end. I want to use it offshore with a dead herring threaded on.Â

Hi Fat Tuna - I am fish commercially hook & line for cuttlefish, squid & octopus. I found squid spikes (not for iki-jimi but for baiting with fish) in Autrailia & got them sent mail order to me in UK. A number of outlest do them there 0 Both metal https://www.fishingtackleshop.com.au/pro...pikes.html & also plastic - The plastic ones are being marketed as 'Squidators' although I am struggling myself to find them right now. Real simple to use & highly effective I use whole fresh mackerel as bait & often 'pods' come up simply holding the bait without being prickled.
I've put up underwater footage of cuttles going for squid jigs here in Cornwall:  https://youtu.be/Oqfozsq8ngM  Hope the info might help & the vid is of interest.  Shrimpy

Thanks a lot. How are you filming underwater?  That's interesting that you commercial fish for them. We have a lot of squid here in New England but I don't know of anyone who does it commercially this far north. I know they net them up down in Cape Cod.  Do you fish from a boat or from land?  We don't have cuttlefish or octopus here but I wish we did. I didn't know that fishery existed over in the UK. I like to watch Youtube videos of people fishing over there. |
