Nice. I still have a problem when you pass Palomar's loop over jig how do you draw it so tight so jig close to leader? Do you leave any play between knot and jig swivel?

No play whatsoever. It's tied drop-shot style. Look up on youtube. There are loads of videos on how-to. The palomar knot can be tricky to cinch up. If youre having trouble try using chap stik

Wow video really helped. Again I think light line and sinker is key. If you used let's say 20 test too stiff and jigs would not have right action being tied to line that way.

Yea this rig killed last fall. I'll never forget the time I was with you, Calamariaddict, when I left my line in the water and went to my car to call my daughter (all the generator noise!). Came back and had a double-header of jumbos on the line. If only every night could be so good.

 

My favorite jig is the tiny Yo-zuri Aurora in orange or pink.

10lb braid.

We use the same rig except between the sinker and the bottom jig tie in a tiny swivel. From that swivel to sinker we use 2 or 4# test. That way if you get stuck, you break off the sinker but save the jigs. For the rest of the rig we use 6-10# flouro.

Have any of you tried bullet head Martinetti style jigs? They are deadly in RI and Ma. We often tie one on the bottom without a sinker and a prawn type or Yo-Zuri Aurora about 24" above it. Coleman's has great selections of these.

If weather permits, in the next week or so I'm going to try a squid scouting trip. Planning on deploying my light from my yak out in the open sound off of Huntington. I'm thinking that they will show outside before they come deep into the harbor. The area where i'm going to try has had a lot of small bait lately, so the food is there. Will post with results.

what I am afraid if the jig on the bottom will easily snag on the bottom? or they tend to not let the jig sink to the bottom and try to jig in the middle column of the water

Yes, we do lose one occasionally. But we feel it is worth it because they are so effective. Next time we go, we intend to try one inline like the other jigs with the sinker on the bottom. Or, because there is a loop on the bottom of these jigs, one could add a small, lite-weight leader with a sinker below the jig. Don't know if the Martinettis will be as effective rigged like that. But going to try them that way.

These are the lights I used for squid.  One is 50 watt LED, smaller one is 20 watt, both are rechargeable, last between 2 1/2 to 3 hours depends on the air temperature.

Tonight I went out in my yak in the open sound off Huntington searching for squid. I figured they would likely show outside before making an appearance deep inside the harbor.

 

Tried 2 drops. First one 1000' off beach in 15'. Nothing after one hour. Next drop was about 75' from a jetty in 9' on a dropoff to 15'. Got a tap after 10 min. 5 min. later got this little squirt (don't laugh, its a start!). Jig got zapped 2 more times a few min later. Only tried 2nd spot for 1/2 hr. then had to leave before my car got locked into the parking lot. 

 

So, mission accomplished, if in a tiny way. It's confirmed. The squid are starting to come in.
