New York Squid

Last night I was fishing from the beach in Noyack Bay.  Saw a few large squid chasing spearing in a a foot of water. Cast a jig for a half-hour, but no hits. Those are the first squids I've seen in a long time. A good sign. Maybe the run will start early this year?

Noyack bay is way out east, right. Good weakfishing there. Looking forward to hopefully an early run, although with this warm weather no one knows. Maybe late October Huntington will start.

I guess I know where you will be late October. Lol. I may start mid October just to keep it honest and get out. I do want to try oyster bay this year. Just ate last batch of calamari. Nothing better. Can't wait to get started. Are you writing another article for the fisherman??

Oct. 26 2016, my first catch of the season was also my best. Got 80, though many were small. Bite lasted until mid-Dec. My last catch (with Calamariaddict) got abt 25, mostly jumbos.

You use high low rig or single jig? What size and color? Do you use any underwater light?  I only got around 10 squid one night most of the time everytime I go, I think the gear I use is too heavy. This year I am going to try 4lb forocarbon fishing line. Lets see..

 

I think water there is pretty shallow during the low tide , you can see squid down there during the low tide?

I only been there only once, and one guy told me that another guy got 80 squid in around 2 hours, I think he might talked about you  :thumbsup2:  :thumbsup2:  :thumbsup2:

On a serious note if you guys are serious about putting time in to squid fish piers, think about getting rid of your generators. They don't allow them in Greenport and in May I was asked by s cop to shut it off at the Huntington docks. The noise attracted him , and he said I could probably stay if I kept generator off. We'll there goes the light. I have since come up with a way to use car or boat batteries. Light will not last as long . 300 watt led 1.5 hours and 100 watt led 4.5 hours. Underwater lights can last all night. Generators will ruin it for all of us. Don't need to light up night like Yankee stadium. Egiman will agree with me, and gas said the same thing in the past.

I  prefer using the battery and led. I dont really like the generators. Squid fishing should be relaxing, you wont feel relaxing if a generators create a lot of sounds. The resident there wont like it too and if they call the police, the spot will probably be shut down or things like that.

We use a 12V tractor battery. Quite lite and easy to carry in a backpack even for us septuagenarians. We tested it one time and it kept an underwater light on for 33 hours and was still working.

I actually just submitted a comprehensive article on off-the-dock squidding that I expect will be published in the Nov glossy issue of The Fisherman magazine. It will cover everything. If you don't buy the mag it can be viewed online for free. I've been fooling around with a diagram of my fave rig. I'll see if I can give a sneak peek at that.

We use a Deka battery but the brand is not important. Any small 12 V will work. Not sure of the brand of the light but go to Ebay and search for squid lights and many will pop up. We just bought the least expensive for about $13. Been using it all summer with good results.

-Just spent a half-hour trying to upload a pic of my squid rig. Not working. Will try again later. I use a 4' hydro glow green light. Battery is a Optima blue top. I got that battery to run a trolling motor off of. Weighs prob over 50lbs.  It's more than is needed for the light.
