2017 Rhode Island Squid Report
It was a gorgeous night!  Was able to see the cow jump over the moon!  I was able to slay 25 large tubes within the 30 min time frame.

However my only complaint was the full moon.  It was nice to be able to see everything around you, but it caused the squid to scatter and hide.

I'll wait for the full moon to go away, came close to almost had a moon tan last night.

tips:

1. Stick to harbors where the water are warm from drainage when the waters cold.

2. Use small profile lures to catch all squid sizes.  But the concept big bait big fish does still apply.

3. Use natural light > attracts plankton > attracts baitfish > attracts Eji

4. Popular color - hot Pink & Green

Don't catch any today, then it hits hard tomorrow while you didn't go.  Don't feel bad, it's part of fishing = )

Going tonight with frances fleet pt. judith RI.    Will post tomorrow when I wake up.

Going to be a nice night wave wise, hope the full moon crap dosent mess it up.

Should be cloudy so that might help.   Next is current, with full moon who knows.

Sorry for the delay on reporting.  39 degrees, wind was trucking out of the east.   Really strong current.

Ended up with 5 med to large squid.  Turned out I HAD the most.  Everyone had 1-3 squid.  All were

tight to the bottom.  We drifted and anchored from the west wall almost down to Nebraska shoal.

I think the catch would have been better if conditions were better.  They are there just not heavy.

No squid followed the ones that were hooked and no squid in the lights by the surface.  It was a

dissapointing trip to say the least.  Still on the search for the big ones for sea bass and fluke bait.

Had trouble tendind bottom with 5 oz bank sinker.

I just read the FF report after I posted to see how accurate they are reporting, here it is.

Friday May 12th

We went out on our first squid trip last night. Not alot to report, The water temp is still pretty cold. Although they marked quite a few, only a few squid managed to make it into the boat. Although it was a slow night, we weren’t discouraged. It will get better and better and next week looks like its going to bring in some warmer temps, to hopefully warm the water up. We are going to head out again tonight at 7:00 p.m. There is plenty of room, if interested.

Tomorrow’s debut Fluke trip is questionable. A storm for the weekend might push the opening day to Wednesday May 17th. We will update this post as soon as we get the latest weather update.

Always seems like the FF's reports are very accurate. Thanks Francis!

My squid buddies reported a blood, i mean ink bath last night at GI.  Unfortunately I didn't go because I can't squid 2 nights in a row.  Goes against my squid religion.  Sike!  Just waiting for the weekend.  >= )

Frances Fleet Report for Friday Night:

First mate Greg reported a slow night on the squid. We think the ripping tide has been the issues. there are plenty of squid being marked but very close to the bottom. People were having to use 4-6oz just to get the jigs top stay in the squid zone. We are also seeing well below average temperatures which makes for a long night. Next week is looking much better with the weather warming and the tide easing.

Me and a friend went to Stonington last night from 9-12. I caught one and my friend caught 6, all decent size tubes (6-8inches). They came in schools but never stayed, some near the surface, most below visibility. 5 minutes after we got there a huge squid approached my friends jig near the surface. Biggest squid I've personally seen so far, must have been at least a 16"+ tube. Talk about getting your hopes up.

My son, his best friend and I went to GIB Friday night and only got 2! We were there for about 3 hours. A regular right next to us got about 30 in the same timeframe!! Switched to 4 lb Flourocarbon on all our rods hoping to have better luck than last year. Back to the drawing board and more research I guess...

I'll say "hi" next time I see your light Fisher! I didn't see you reply to me until I was in my truck. Yeah, the warm / hot temp this week should bring em in.
