Newport Ri 2016 Squid Season
#81
Another obervation from GI Bridge. I observed a lot of fishean used portable LED spotlight instead of the traditional gas lantern. These lights seemed to be strong in tems of luminescence but life seemed to be short.

Does anyone know what are the wattage? Checked out n ebay, there are a few wattage options ranging from 10W to 50W.

Any advice?

I'm not sure. I use a hydro glow light connected to a car jump starter battery. It lasts more than a few hours.

Remember to share your lights. Hate those people never want to share their lights. Lol.

Went out with Frances fleet last night 7pm to 1am.    20 -40 FOW and it was a slow but

steady pick all night in the rain and drizzle.   Right around 100 squid for the night.

Mostly singles with 5 or 6 doubles, no triples for me.Both long and short fin squid with

the short fins being some monsters.  Squid were from the bottom to the surface at

different times through the night.  took a couple dozen on the surface, most of my

squid came from traditional bottom jigging.  Would have to rate it as fair to good.

BTW cost of trip was $45.

Nice report Janz. Can you describe or put up a pic of your bottom rig. You use a weight with multiple jigs? Thanks.

Using medium size jigs (pink yozurris) with 2 oz weight.

Surface action was with no weight and using light weight jig

We started right at the red can on Nebraska Shoals

Very foggy could not keep track as I could not see land

We drifted for hrs according to capt 2.5 miles before we went back

for new drift, only moved once all night.  Still cleaning em and cutting for bait

will try to post pic later

New to this site but read a lot of good information atleast on locations to try.. I'm from mass and never knew how great of a squid fishery Rhode Island was! Tried for my first time tonight from the GI causeway.. Brought two 1000 lumen led work lights hooked up to inverter off truck battery. Pink yozuri squid jigs one lightly weight one not. Tried everything from 1/4 oz weight to 2 oz weight tied off to the back of the jig as instructed by watch hill outfitters.. Only got one squid but meanwhile the guys left and right of me had two 5 gallon buckets full each.. Tried every motion possible jigging paying attention to the two masters next to me.. One guy had a generator and couldn't keep his line in rn water. Saw him using a multi hook jig.. Seemed to be the only difference in my set up and his. Have to try again tomorrow with something similar and hope for better success
