Portalington Report, VIC
#1
Hi,

Started off trying at St Leonards but after we almost got blown off the pier by the gale force southerlies we acked up and went to sheltered Portalington pier. Not a singe fish or squid was sighted all day despite the nice burley trail i had going. I did end up with a nice octopus so the day wasn't a TOTAL waste <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

I caught a glimpse of the occie swiming between the breakwater and pier and threw a baited jig at it, i actually hit it a few times as it continued to swim showing NO intereste in taking the bait <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

after jumping from rock to rock i caught up with it as it settled on a rock. I presented the baited jig, it wrapped one tentacle around it and i struck <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> and hooked him <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

I'll post the photo in the next couple of days

Here is the occie... What was surprising to me was that it stuck out like a sore thumb as he swam in the water,...

Awwwwwe I like occies <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> They are much, much smarter than squid and I usual let them go <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> How did you cook it? Did it taste alright?

Hi guys,

I was a bit dumbfounded by this occie too. It was the same colour as in the photo when it was in the water. Even when it sat on a rock it didnt change colour, as i would of expected.

The way i cook'em up, guaranteed not to be tough, is:

1. I place occie tentacles in a metal dish with a bit of olive oil and oregano.

2. Cover dish with foil so juices stay in and place in oven at 200degrees C.

3. After 20mins try sticking a fork in the tentacle and see if itgoes in, if it doesn't then cook it a little more, if it does then

4. Take off foil and place under griller to get some colour or whack on the bbq to get colour and nice bbq taste

5. good squirt of lemon and a dash of salt, cut into bite sized pieces and down she goes with lots'a' <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer_mug.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':beer' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer_mug.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':beer' />

Is that a good size occy??

We got one off Granite Island in SA one day, which was probably 2-3 times bigger than that one - it was massive!!!

But we put it back - wouldnt know what to do with it - it was moving all over the place!!!
SA - the land of the bigger fish. The fish on the east, measure the least, but if you head west, you'll be bringing in the best!!

gday mr willy,

I wouldn't call it a good size octopus... I have seen a 3kg one get pulled in at Flinders pier, now THAT'S a good sized occie <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':beer' />

We were fishing in between the two piers at Queenscliff one night , 4 handlines one in each corner of the boat , I checked one handline and felt a heavy weight wound it in and their was a huge octopuss on the jig, we decided we didnt want it so we threw it back after ten mintes I checked the lines again and felt a heavey weight on another line it was the bloody octopuss again so again I shook him loose, another ten minutes I checked the lines again and yep you guessed it he came back again, after shaking him loose another five times after that we decided to move, I was getting excited at our new spot because not longer after settling into our new spot I got a nice hefty weight on my line, this squid must weigh a ton I thought as I pulled it up I looked down and yes it was another bloody octopuss

Needless to say that was the only thing we caught that night
