Newport Ri 2013 Squid Season
You need one this year !

No license needed for squid... That EPO is an idiot!

[/quote]OK fish at your own risk. Just remember that IDIOT has a ticket book and I would not want too be pulled from good squid fishing when they come in because of no license
Went out last night off Point Judith from dusk till 10:00 pm, water temp was just under 48 degrees. We anchored up and chummed to no avail, temps are still too cold, but it could happen any time now. Might give it a try this Friday, heard the fleets were starting charters then.

Went out last night, temp was just under 48, what is the temp we are looking for?
I just called the RI DEM at 401-222-3070 and they confirmed that squid fishermen DO need a license. They acknowledged that the Jan 10 regulation says otherwise, but the 2013 rules require it. Call them if you need to hear it yourself or want to voice your opinion/displeasure...Maybe if they get a ton of calls they will reconsider the change.
fortunately I am 63 which entitles me to a FREE license in Massachusetts, and Mass has reciprocity with RI, so I'm all set either way just in case they want to check.
I agree with algreenjr. They don't mind to give you a ticket.
At this point NO one needs one!!! No squid to even catch... My opinion everyone should have one if the squid are here, chances are fish are also. The best stripers i got last year was when i was squiding all night and using my catch to cast out for anything that would bit and before sunrise every time i would get striper action. If u are a squiding why not GET ONE to be on safe side like ALGREENJR said why take a chance during a good or even great squiding day. WE are over due for the SQUID. This week for sure <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />
Hey squiderbruce were you down in Jamestown on sunday parked on the corner? If that was you than I was the guy who parked next too you in the red van.

Good luck. Sounds like a blast in the yak. Please have navigation lights on if going after dusk.

Yesterday, I tried finding squid off the beaches in RI but the temps there are still at around 48 and none were home yet.

So my plan B is to try the area just north of the newport brige. You all know the reports,, but the water temps there are almost 54 and its time for their arrival.

You also know herring (Atlanic) have been running thick there, so if you bring a number 8 sabiki rig you should do ok.

If anyone wants to join the expedition, we will leave from Point Judith Marina around 5 or 6pm and will be back around midnight, unless we are into a lot of action and everyone agrees. It's about an hours ride each way.

Boat is a 35 foot downeast with full safety gear (well, no life raft at the moment - still waiting for a new one to arrive - but we won't need it up there).

PM for costs or other info.

Tx

PS- weather should be great, especially up in the bay.
You might be better off fishing the south side of Block Island. The water in the bay is warm but the squid are probably still offshore waiting for the nearshore water to warm enough to get to the bay. I might try Block on Sunday night if the winds are calm.

Possibly, but finding squid offshore isn't as easy as it sounds, and drifting the punishment grounds at night without a raft is something ill pass on for now.

Besides. They are overdue and they have been in Nantucket sound for the requisit week. Someone has to find them. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />.
The francis fleet posted an update on their website:

Quote:Just got word from Capt. Frank that we will be pushing our start up date for SQUID to Saturday night, instead of Friday night. Reports are that they are starting to show up but we hope by giving it one more day, things will continue to improve.

Newport is looking like a much better idea (they almost always show up in newport before the beaches).....
Ok, nobody saw any squid last night so I'm going to postpone until Sunday night. Maybe another couple of days will do it.

Until then, there is always fluke at BI.
