I have always been a keen squidder in Sydney Harbour and Pittwater, and have always been impressed with the stock of squid in such busy waterways.
However I want to go out squidding off the rocks and have no idea when in the year is best. It was suggested to me that Winter is best for squidding of rocks, and it is to my experience that Summer and Autumn is definately superior inside estuaries. What is your take on this? Please keep in mind I need info specific to Sydney, as each state may vary with squid seasons. thanks
Just get out there and give it a try. Who cares when it is - i think the best way to learn is through experience - you'll have some bad trips and some good trips, but you'll learn lessons on the way....and it will lead to more consistent catches in the end.....

Its not all that cheap to go fishing these days, but think about it........
For a decent trip:
Say................$40 petrol, $20 bait, $20 fuel for boat, $20 top up tackle, food, drinks, etc. Thats $100. You get out the house, spend time with family and/or friends, come home with a healthy feed........... only $100?? Mate, i love getting away from the "big smoke". Although i live in a country area anyway and wouldnt change for the world!! I love being isolated - not having people bothering me, and just being able to do whatever i want - the best thing about the surf beach we fish is that it has no mobile coverage!! No bloody work ringing up, no parents ringing up worried what i am doing.........only downside is if you get stuck - we always take at least 2 cars!!

Sorry to bring it back to the original questions, but does anyone one have any tips on squidding from the rocks in sydney harbour in the winter as I would'nt mind having a crack at it. And not asking to give any "secret spots" but even the ballpark would help as if I could avoid spending 2 or 3 hours in a spot where I have absolutely no chance it would be good to know in advance.
In saying that I just spent a few hours this afternoon in the same spot I have had some hits and absolutely nothing. The big difference was the tide was really low normally it has been on the high.
Gav for Sydney Harbour stick to the high tides. Squid like rising tides more.
As for spots, I will tell you a few. Go to places like Clifton Gardens wharf(towards the rocks area is dynamite), Balmoral wharf, Kirribilli or any other wharf structure. It really isnt hard. Thanks for these, I have been fishing (not squid but fishing) on the corner under the bridge looking across at a ferry station at kirribilli thinking it could be a spot. Sounds like the same area you are talking about
I havent fished Kirribili myself but I keep getting reports of good catches there. Mate, try under the spit bridge at night. They love the lights. I've seen people on their boats going for <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' /> for their kingies but I haven't actually seen anyone catch any.
If you're fishing offland it would have to be the little park area with the car park is it?

Well I have not seen any pulled in by the boats, only from the little park. I don't think the cover for them goes out very far, gets very deep out there. I am very new to <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> and am trying to get kings, so I need to learn how to get them. But i certainly have seen them caught there.

These inkers were caught on a beautiful summer morning which I also shared with a close mate. We ended up with 8 in total and these were my 5, and were the last squid I caught on my daughter's soft plastic fishing rod which has become my squid fishing rod for the last 2 years until I recently purchased a specialist squid rod - it's a $50 Shimano Catana and it is a great squid rod, but I had to spoil myself with the new rod (plus my daughter wanted her rod back!).
