Newport Ri 2013 Squid Season
#81
I just finished email inquirely about the yamashita squid jig(warm jacket) and it seems to be they are not interest to expend their business in state.

I know their jig is one of the best but price wise way too much for just squidding.

Their products starting from $9.99+tax from local bait shop most expensive one is about $20+shipping from Japan or other country.

I wish there is easy access to get those jig but dealer information is almost impassible to find yet they do not have product catalog with price listSad

I guess I just using yo-zuri jig instead yamashita for rest of this seasonSad

Don't get me wrong. Yo-zuri is work better than no name brand jig but it sucks yamashita company is not interested to sell directly.

I went to JT last night with my beloved generator. Spent about 3hours but nothing happened.

I checked water temp last night it's about 47degree.

I think another week we should see em.

I may have partally answered my own question. Edgartown harbor had a really strong (daytime even) run of squid last year. The rips in nantucket sound are good locations to check as well.

Last year the run was in early to mid may.

Now it comes down to timing. Get it wrong and it's a 100 mile road trip (well, from point judith anyway). Get it right, and its a memorable 100 mile ride. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />
Menemsha also has great squidding if you're Vinyard bound. Last year was the best in 30 years on the Vinyard, hopefully it will repeat this year.
I mostly squid on the Vinyard and I usually way outfish the Yo-zuris using Martinetti prawn jigs in smaller sizes than the average Yo-zuri. I use the model "Prawn 2008" pink, green, and orange and sometimes I add a little solder to the weight so it sinks a little faster. Colman's Squid Jig Warehouse (internet) has many good models at fantastic prices.

I agree. Like I mentioned everyone want to out fishing than other. When I tried yamashita jig last time resolt was amazing!

That's why I was going crazy to get them but it seems to be they don't care.

So I will using knock out jig from Marinetti and yo-zuri.

Anyway can't wait for squid runSmile)

Thanks..., I may get out there this weekend to check things out!
I seem to recollect that the water temp should be around 53-54 degrees before we see any squid around Newport. We're getting close to those temps but we are not there yet. If you live nearby it doesn't hurt to check the "hot" spots every now and then. The early run seems to produce the larger ones.
