Newport Ri 2013 Squid Season
#21
water usually isn't to rough. i squid on the bridge every year and seen people in all sorts of boats. Best place to launch would be fort Adams in my opinion. there a couple of other spots that are closer but the parking is a big question mark. at fort Adams there is a very nice ramp and usually plenty of parking.

I traveled to the goat island bridge last night, not a soul was there fishing, and I searched for those little inkers in the water and didn't see one...

I got some new jigs at the RISAA show I can't wait to try out.

I am also going to be upgrading my lighting arrangement. I blew up last years 1000 watt system and couldn't breathe life back into it, so Lowes has a 1200 watt system which I think I need in my arsenal. I also will be powering it off a 12 marine battery with alligator clips and a power inverter. I am curious to see how long that lasts. Mostly I use the quiet honda generators.

I can't wait. Get your sleep now!!!

Kutocon, Thanks for the info. I live quite a ways, 2 hours to be exact, and didn't want it to be a wasted drive.

new2ink, Fort Adams is probably the best launch you can use and there is plenty of parking available. If you have base access, the Newport Navy Station has a real good launch at the MWR Marina. North side of Newport Bridge.
#27
Hope to you guys out there soon !! Hopefully weather starts to warm up and we can get the jigs going and the boats full of ink. Has anyone notice how the squid seem to am at your eyes? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
#28
I usually jig from the pier at the Navy station or close by. I've never jigged from a boat. I wear glasses, so I have a little protection from the ink..., Another week or two?
#29
Went down to GI bridge on Saturday night no signs of squid, shined lights in the water for a while and saw nothing. Going to check this weekend.

Anyone out there fish from a boat? If so anyone wanna share their hot spots? Want to try from my boat this year, as well as the bridge.
#31
I also have a great idea for a powerful light that puts out 1000 watts and only draws 250 watts. Only costs about $55 to make.
#32
I've been wait for long winter to just get out there doing some squidding and I'm kind of new to this site. Hope you guys having fun with squiddingSmile)

TJ - AIST, No base access but thanks also for the suggestion. Really new to the seen and been watching many videos on different styles of catching these denizens of the dark <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':woot:' />. I'm even trying to master the art of cast netting....if the opportunity ever arises....to catch these critters.

JoshFish32381 i like to anchor down next to the bridge about 20 or so feet away and have lights on both sides of the boat. seems to work every year for me. on slow night i start heading towards goat island and see how people are doing from the bridge . but its been good the last four years there and right before sunrise the strippers usually show up. good luck to you and maybe we can all link up one day out there. hopefully we get some good reports soon
#38
That would be great thanks for the tip on the stripers to went a few times last year but we only caught porgy fun day but would like something of size .
#39
I didn't have any luck until I tried a lots of different type of jig.

Usually Japanese jigs are doing great. Especially yo-zuri, yamashita etc but

They are too expensiveSad

So this year I bought some yo-zuri copied jig with glow in dark paint on it and

It was great for day time and night time.

You will see its me cause I'm the only one who put that glow in dark paint on the jig.

Good luck!!!

Anyone using a freshwater boat should note that if they have a painted trailer, not galvanized or aluminum your trailer will rot out from under the boat in short time. Even if you wash them. I know this because I sell trailer parts for a living.
