Newport Ri 2012 Squid Season
Water has been very dirty as of late. I think thats why it's been slow, along with blues and bass being around chasing them around the bay. The water should clear up in less than a week, given that there is no storm coming threw. Couple of in and out tides, the water will be nice and clear again.

The full moon fishing thing..I hate fishing a full moon, never any luck. During a full moon the tides get higher/lower and the currents are stronger. Making small fish like squid not to be able to stay in one area.

On a normal night at a place I fish, I would be able to hold ground with #3 or #4 sinker during fast currents. But when a full moon is in effect, I wasn't even able to stay with #7 sinker. I'm not trying to find out Saturday what size sinker I'll need to hold ground.
The bite has been sucking because of the Full Moon. It sweeps the bait and squid in and out. The currents are too strong the baitfish and squid are more spread out. The New Moon always supplies the best bite.
I think nothing could help more than a warm front pushing through.
Not much going on over at frances fleet either. Just waiting patiently I guess
Went Thursday nite. 3 of us got 2 total in 3 hours.

We went by boat under the Newport Bridge. Set up at 7:45pm Sat night. Fished until midnight. 4 people jigging. If you count ALL of the squid we caught it would be a grand total of --0-- Yup that's right, big goose egg! We saw 2 come out of the water on the boat next to ours and that's it.

No one was getting anything. I pulled anchor and cruised over to GI bridge to see if anyone was having any luck and we hung there for 15 minutes or so and didn't see any splashing water. I guess the super moon = super lousy squiding.

Might try again next Sat night.
Squid were sparse in GI and JT docks, any one having luck else where?

Fished JT wed night... caught a dozen... really had to work for it. Fished til 3:30 a.m.
I am going to jig GI tonight. Wish me luck. At least the parking will be easy
went last night got 10 in 2 hours not to bad, they were very picky with colors white seemed to do the trick
Did anyone go out last night?? Going out to night at GI was wondering if anyone can tell me what's the status over there
Did anyone fish the weekend? Couldn't get down there...too much to do at home.
Went out on the Bay Friday night and was cruising up and down the Providence River. I ended up under the Newport Bridge about 10:15 and found a buddy of mine that had been there from 7:30 and only had caught 3.

That’s 1 per hour! Wow. Probably had to cool the reel ½ way through.  Anyway I decided I was too tired to set up for 1 an hour action and headed for Potters cove to get some shut eye.
Last report of strong squid fishing in R.I. that I got was around Prudence island last week. Now it appears big stripers are hitting strong in the bay.
Nice weather coming up, let's hope that the bite improves. I'm going to give it a try tomorrow (Thursday).
