Newport Ri 2011 Squid Season

Was out at GI from 10pm to 12am. Cold, windy, rainy and choppy water. I stayed on the wall near the park. I made off with two squids. Caught them both without using a sinker and letting the jig float down. I just watched the line get tight from them taking the jig or felt them hitting it.

Did you try off the bottom, i was there with no light and caught some ,too cold windy rain

Rain does not matter. I've had some of the most productive outings in pouring down rain. Just sucks when your soggy & cold.

Hey guys,

I've fished squid at GI, Rhode Island the past few years but new to the site. Thank you for your posts about when the squid came in this year. I drive up to GI each year from NYC as the squid fishing in Long Island has dried up recently (dredging?) but it is hard to justify a 8 hour round-trip drive without knowing for certain whether they are here or not. As crazy as it gets on the causeway, I have met some great people there and I am sure the multitude of lights helps attract more squid.

In exchange for this info you guys gave me here, I'd like to add my 2 cents about lighting that may help some people out. When it comes to light, there are several options. 1-Propane lantern, 2-Halogen light w/ Generator, 3-LED light or Fluorescent run on rechargeable batteries. A gas lantern will run about $60 not including fuel, just be careful as it is HOT. Fishing from the bridge, this is probably your most cost effective bet. A halogen light is extremely bright, but will pull at least 1000 watts, requiring a generator, total cost $300-$500. For brightness, a halogen+generator is the way to go, but it will cost $, is bulky and is loud, especially at night. A fluorescent light pulls ~100 watts and can be run on a deep cycle battery, costing about $100. This can be very effective if you want a bright light but do not want to run a generator or use propane. 12V deep cycle marine batteries can be found at any car store (Autozone, Sears, etc). The LED is interesting as it pulls less than 2 amps of energy (~15Watts), allowing it to be run on a smaller 12V battery. You can power enough LEDs to light up a whole city on a marine deep cycle battery.

I personally use a 1amp 200 LED worklight (Home depot) hooked up to a 12 amp-hour battery (Motorized wheelchair battery) that fits easily in my backpack and is almost as bright as a propane light. If you wish to go with rechargeable battery power instead of propane/gas fuel, just keep in mind that you want deep cycle and not starter batteries of whatever size you decide to get. It's not that expensive to get a light and would love to see more people bring lights of their own to attract more squid.

Report from this past Friday:

22 squid, fished 10PM-3AM on a hi-low rig with 3in leaders and green and blue yozuri 3.5in lures. I missed a lot of hits Friday and wondering whether to go to a longer leader-line...hmm. Feel free to PM me for any questions. Hope this Saturday is better!

Nailed the squid last night aboard the Lady Frances boat outta Narragansett, well worth the $45.



Two 5 gallon buckets of 1-2+ foot squiddies.



Even had time to dress em' all out before hitting the dock!

I dropped by Newport on this glorious day to find some hard core day squidders. Few did good for the first few hours then the bite died out. Hopefully things pick back up in the PMs. Where are all the squids!?

Stayed at GI till 10 PM. A few squid in short runs. Not many around Yet! They will be here soon.They are filling their buckets on the boats out of Pt Judith.

I was at Jamestown tonight til midnight and only saw three (3) squid come up all night.



Note to self - bring hat and gloves.

Haven't been out yet. Newbie here. Just got jigs in mail. does useing a snap swivel make a big difference in jigging or should I not use one. Figure it would make for quick and easy changes at night. Does any one know how the Newport Police have been regarding the parking meters and parking in general?

In the past I was able to feed the meter when a free space was unavailable, but year before last I got tagged.

Last year I spent my time in Jamestown.

Went this past weekend 2X (daughter in tow)

Got skunked although I did see some ink near the hotel and scattered about the causeway.

I had a visual on a couple of squid here and there and saw a nice one pulled in but not the "three at a time action" I am looking for as of yet.



Will make the trip up from CT again, and have a coffee and donut for the person who brings me back up there for the hot action.



I am thinking I am going to come up for a couple days and camp out if anyone wants to share a site at one of the campgrounds.



Time to freeze up some brine.

~3.5% salt in water to give the advantage of little osmotic difference for the squid, as well as a slight decrease in ice melt temperature to get them closer to the freezer.



I figure about 4 tbs per gallon. That tastes about right.



My daughter (6y/o) drew me a lucky squid shirt, so if the sun is out and you see it say hi!

Went Friday 5/20 from 2am to 6am - Skunked out, pick up about 10 on the bridge.



Went Saturday 5/21 with the Francis Fleet on the Lady Francis and caught approx. 130+ squid between 4 guys, (two were newbies) - Huge sized squid. make make not want to go back to GI again. Awesome time, according to them, it was slow but that was the most squid I have ever caught in one sitting.



Going to take a break because as soon as I was done and home with the squidfishing trip, I was getting ready for a black sea bass trip.



I am completely fished out for the next few days.



Hope the weather turns around and this week is looking better.

I, personally, like to minimize hardware as much as possible. The jigs you purchased are very delicate in their presentation.



Here is my rig:



8# mono running line to the spool.

tie to 4# or 6# mono

tie 4" double overhand knot loop

15" space

tie 4" double overhand knot loop

15" space

tie 4" double overhand knot loop



Very simple.



I loop to loop a 1/2 oz or 1 oz bank sinker on the bottom.

I loop to loop a pink jig on the next loop up

I loop to loop a green jig on the top loop.



when I see a pattern of color, I switch to that color - either in my own catching or others around me.



Sometimes I will only tie two (2) loops and in that case will put a weighted jig on the bottom and another above it.



All the jigs I use I either make or I get from Lucky's Bait in Warren, RI or Sam's Bait in Middletown. Good people and they have a great selection and stock.

use no hardware whatsoever. the squid are so finicky as is, anything that will scare them off certainly will.
