eating raw squid

hello squidders,



has anyone ever eaten raw squid and can it kill you?



i have seen people eat it in japanese restaurants but i have no idea if they doing anything to the squid before they serve it. would they freeze it first and then thaw it out?

hi how dee,



i have eaten raw squid (sashimi style) and well..to be honest i did not like it. its a bit chewy. it tastes better cooked in my opinion.



i am not sure if the squid had been frozen first or not.

Actually,



My brothers have eaten live squid freshly caught off Flinders pier.



They both said it was nice n sweet, i was'nt game.





Oh yeah the both survived the experience.

Freezing only kills mature worms, as with any raw seafood there is always a risk of getting this parasite. Bacterial infections shouldn't be much of a problem as long as you clean and gut the squid properly.



Having said that I love sushi and have eaten my share of raw fish, prawns and squid. With squid there is usually little risk of parasites as they are not old enough - most risk comes from fish 10 years and older.



And yes, fresh squid, prawns and oysters are all much sweeter fresh.

Actually my last trip, we had not caught a calamari in 5 hours and I declared If one was caught I would eat a tenticle raw.



Works out I had to eat a tentile (afer it was dimembered), although found it was still squirming wilst i was eating. Also had the suckers caught in the back of my mouth.



Next time I'll make sure i cut suckers off too (or keep my mouth shut). <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />:

Once I ate raw octopus in japan, the tentacle still moved inside my mouth.....

I wondered if the octopus still alived???? or the chef cut off a small piece of its tentacle each time when there was the order.

Lol I definately wont eat raw squid. Ever. Wont even try it. Why would you want to when theyre so nice cooked?

Joe G - HA HA HA HA HA HA!!! Great story, well done!!



As for eating raw squid - its probably one form of sushi i would try - wouldnt eat raw fish or prawns or anything of the like, but squid i probably would try - havent yet, but ill stick to cooking it i think!!!
SA - the land of the bigger fish. The fish on the east, measure the least, but if you head west, you'll be bringing in the best!!

Actually, many of the Koreans here in the Seattle, Washington, USA area eat the squid raw!!!!!



The largest percentage of people fishing in my area are Korean, or other Asian. They like to joke around a bit about how they like to eat it raw. A lot of them cut it in strips and dry it, I hear the dried squid is good with beer while watching MOVIES!!

Though you don't get the nice BIG ones here in SEATTLE, but they are good just the same. You do not need to freeze them. Gut them, skin them and chill them in iced cold water for 2-3 hours. As for flavoring .... go with straight soy sauce, soy sauce & WASABI or soy sauce & vinegar. Other ways to eat the critters ... rinse well and get rid of most of the ink and boil the whole thing(tenticles and guts and all) in water, soy sauce & sugar .... it is so good!!! Trust me .... I tell you no lies. By the way, I am JAPANESE and I have been eating SQUID for the last 39 years!!! :japan:

Marinated in lemon,lime juice chilli and extra virgin olive oil it aint 1/2bad.After a few hours the flesh actually takes on that white cooked look.In my trade as a chef i have actually had asian diners ask for it raw!!.Still prefer it cooked though <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

that's how i use to eat it. also dried squid ... which normally should be boiled or fried, i like it chewy <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

is there any risk with eating dried squid (which should normally be cooked) from the package ???
