Was supposed to head up last night, fish all night, then during the day today. Unfortunately with this wind ripping 20kt+, that's not happening. I had to do landscaping instead <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />[/quote]

Trying to fish a 20+ knot breeze is less than fun. gotta love casting 150 yards of line 50 feet. oh shiit, there goes my hat........

The 10-day forecast doesn't look great (some chilly/windy nights, and scattered rain), but i'm thinking about giving GI a shot towards the end of the week- maybe Thursday or Friday night. Will post any results (hopefully there will be something worthwhile to post!)

Went today. Wind was howling, water was dirty with seaweed ,sloppy and cold. Two people in winter clothes were leaving when I got there. They fished for 2 1/2 hours and had two squid. Threw my jig in anyway. Bang! For the next two hours the squid hit hard and then vanished. Left 1 1/2 hours later. Those people who were leaving jumped out of their car and filled a bucket. About a dozen others joined us toward the end of the bite. Everyone was catching. Air temp was 57 and the water was 52-54. It felt much colder. You never know! The calamari was great !!!!!!

holy smokes it was windy an cold out there........ not typical mid may weather imo...

picked up a 1/4 bucket before the kids got too cold and had to pack it up. it's great to see the improvement in the kids squidding skills over the last 3 years... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/fishing.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':rod:' />

Hey guys,

bd1273 here, first post of the season...

We hit the Goat Island Bridge last night...

Buddy and I went out last night around 9:30pm and spent about three hours with not a single squid in the bucket!!!! Funny thing is though about two guys a little further down (25ft away) were catching a good number of squid...how's that possible!!?? We used pink and blue rigs, the same everyone was using that I could see.

What are we missing????????? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':rod:' />

Welcome to my world. I used to wonder about these things. Then i realize it's something they're doing that i'm not. Usually something really subtle.

Same thing happened yesterday. People 50 feet away slamming them. Not me! Schools seem to be very concentrated at times. The day before I was slamming them and others were not until they moved to where I was 50 feet away.

SAME HERE. DID THEY HAVE THEIR OWN LIGHT SOURCE? FROM WHAT I NOTICED THE PEOPLE THAT KNOW HOW TO CATCH THEM HAVE THEIR OWN LIGHT SOURCE AWAY FROM THE BRIDGE. ANYBODY ELSE NOTICE THIS? OH AND I ALWAYS HAVE THE WRONG LURES. GREENHORN HERE.

Hi guys,

Excellent night last night, time to get out there. Showed up around 11PM, fished till 5am with a non-stop bite on predominantly very small squid. They were very light bites, not really slamming the jigs much.

There were a few guys harassing the shore anlgers in boats last bight, coming in very close...uncalled for as there are tons of spots to go set up on anchor away from the spots where shore guys fish. Also, nobody should be fishing inside the private marinas or at the state commercial pier, the police were kicking people out and ticketing last night. We all need to show a little courtesy.....

As for the mystery about catch rates, I have seen guys stand shoulder to shoulder and one guy will outcatch the other 20 to 1. This is a very challenging fishery when the squid are picky and not very thick. Anyone can catch when they are really swarming in numbers and receptive to jigs, but it takes finesse and concentration to put together a catch on a spotty bite.

Your right about courtesy Capt. Dom. People need to pick up their trash as well. The City of Newport leaves garbage cans there ( which they don't have to) and this morning there was trash all over the bulkhead at GI. Plastic bottle caps, food wrappers, apple cores, banana peels etc. Everyone needs to use the area in a responsible way before we all lose the privelage.
